Fond Memories of Ryan O’Neal: Ali MacGraw Reflects on a Timeless Love Story

Ali MacGraw reflects on her cherished moments with the late Ryan O’Neal, her co-star in the iconic film Love Story, who passed away at 82.

Ali MacGraw, Ryan O’Neal,

"Working with Ryan years ago was a highlight of my film career. We remained friends, and his skill, charm, and humor enriched the experience," shared MacGraw, 84, who portrayed O’Neal’s love interest in the 1970 romantic classic written by Erich Segal.

Expressing gratitude for O’Neal's generosity as a co-star, MacGraw acknowledges the impact on her success. She mourns the years of illness he endured and shares her condolences with O’Neal’s children and loved ones.

Recalling their recent collaboration on Love Letters, MacGraw extends sympathy to O’Neal’s family and fondly remembers the joy they shared, hoping he finds peace.

In Love Story, MacGraw portrayed Jenny Cavilleri opposite O’Neal’s Oliver Barrett IV, a tale of love transcending different backgrounds. The film, marking its 50th anniversary in 2021, left an indelible mark with the famous line, “Love means never having to say you’re sorry.”

Reflecting on their unlikely chemistry, MacGraw and O’Neal, despite their differences, recognized the magical connection that propelled the movie to cultural phenomenon status.

MacGraw, overwhelmed by the audience’s emotional response during the premiere, admitted she had no idea about the film’s impact. O’Neal vividly recalled seeing lines around the block, a testament to Love Story's unexpected success.

One of MacGraw’s favorite scenes involves playing in the snow with O’Neal, a moment of spontaneous joy that contributed to the film’s authenticity.

Reuniting in 2015 for Love Letters, MacGraw emphasized the enduring chemistry with O’Neal, describing it as unchanged. O’Neal, affectionately referring to MacGraw as more than a friend, expressed gratitude for their continued collaboration and shared history.

Looking back, MacGraw credited O’Neal, director Arthur Hiller, and the behind-the-scenes crew for Love Story's success. Their collective expertise, she noted, contributed to the film’s greatness.

In their Broadway reunion, MacGraw and O’Neal reprised their connection, emphasizing unchanged chemistry and the joy of working together again. O’Neal fondly called MacGraw his sister, highlighting their enduring friendship and shared history.

As we remember Ryan O’Neal, Ali MacGraw's heartfelt recollections paint a picture of a profound and enduring connection forged during the making of Love Story, an experience that transcended time and left an indelible mark on both their careers.
