Unveiling Oxford's Standout Word for 2023: The Charismatic Rise of "Rizz"

In the vibrant realm of linguistics, the Oxford word of the year 2023 has been unveiled, shining a spotlight on the captivating newcomer, "rizz."

Selected by language experts, "rizz" stems from the essence of "charisma," denoting an individual's prowess in attracting a romantic partner through style, charm, or allure, as elucidated by the Oxford University Press (OUP) in its recent announcement. Garnering over 32,000 votes from the public, "rizz" emerged as the frontrunner, leaving an indelible mark on the linguistic landscape.

The surge in "rizz's" popularity can be traced back to a noteworthy moment earlier this year when Spider-Man actor Tom Holland, responding to Buzzfeed, was questioned about the secret behind his own "rizz." His candid reply? "I have no rizz whatsoever. I have limited rizz."

Expanding its linguistic versatility, the Oxford English Dictionary notes that "rizz" can also function as a verb, particularly in the phrase "rizz up," signifying the act of attracting or engaging in conversation to captivate another person's interest.

While contenders for the word of the year aren't obligated to be entirely novel, they must carry significance reflective of the respective year. OUP emphasized that the 2023 shortlist aimed to encapsulate the prevailing mood, ethos, or preoccupations of the year.

How did "rizz" outshine its competitors in the linguistic arena?

OUP's experts meticulously curated eight words, organizing them into pairs for public voting. From this democratic process, four finalists emerged. A final analysis by the experts culminated in the selection of "rizz" as the triumphant word of the year.

Among the formidable finalists were "prompt," denoting instructions given to artificial intelligence programs influencing content creation; "situationship," characterizing a romantic involvement not officially recognized or established; and lastly, "Swiftie," the endearing term for an ardent fan of the renowned singer Taylor Swift.

In a departure from the previous year's choice of "goblin mode" – a colloquial expression embracing unapologetic laziness rejecting societal norms – 2023 welcomes "rizz" as a linguistic luminary, embodying the year's spirit and linguistic zeitgeist.
