Unveiling the Cause of Matthew Perry's Passing: Insights into the Impact of Ketamine

Matthew Perry's demise resulted from "the acute effects of ketamine," as disclosed in the toxicology report by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office. The specific method of ketamine intake remains unknown. A combination of factors, including drowning, coronary artery disease, and the impact of buprenorphine (used for opioid use disorder), contributed to the accidental manner of death.

Before his passing on October 28, 2023, Perry had been undergoing ketamine infusion therapy to address depression and anxiety. The toxicology report highlighted, "At the elevated levels of ketamine discovered in his postmortem blood specimens, the primary lethal effects would stem from both cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression."

Authorities discovered Perry in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home around 4 p.m., with no signs of foul play or drugs present. First responders were called for a cardiac arrest, as reported by TMZ.

Known for his iconic role as Chandler Bing on "Friends" in the '90s and early 2000s, Perry left a lasting legacy with over 200 episodes across 10 seasons of the NBC sitcom. Following his death, his "Friends" cast members expressed their devastation. In a joint statement, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer conveyed their grief, emphasizing their bond as a family.

Aniston, in an exclusive statement to Variety, shared her last interaction with Perry, describing him as happy, healthy, and on a positive trajectory. Courteney Cox remembered Perry with an Instagram blooper video, expressing gratitude for their shared moments. Matt LeBlanc reminisced about the cherished times they spent together on and off the stage.

Despite Perry's struggles with alcohol and drug addiction, documented in his 2022 memoir, "Friends, Lovers and the big Terrible Thing," his co-stars remembered him fondly. In response to his passing, the Matthew Perry Foundation emerged to support individuals dealing with addiction, reflecting Perry's enduring commitment to helping others.

Variety's chief correspondent, Daniel D'Addario, acknowledged Perry's journey, noting the challenges he faced while portraying a character that blended humor with underlying sadness on "Friends."

In honoring Perry's legacy, the Matthew Perry Foundation articulated its commitment to making a difference in as many lives as possible, echoing Perry's passion for helping those grappling with addiction.

The revelation of ketamine as a pivotal factor in Perry's passing underscores the complexities of mental health and substance use disorders.
