Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig Join Kate McKinnon as Host on ‘Saturday Night Live’
In a long-awaited return to the iconic Studio 8H stage, Kate
McKinnon took on the role of host on "Saturday Night Live," marking
her first appearance after an 18-month hiatus from the show where she spent an
impressive 10 years as a cast member. Joining her for this memorable occasion
were fellow "SNL" veterans, Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig.
Kicking off the night with a hilarious spoof of Hollywood
award shows during the cold open, McKinnon swiftly transitioned to the center
stage, offering a brief and lighthearted monologue. With a stylish blonde bob
and a sleek black tuxedo suit, she playfully acknowledged the peculiarity of
returning to her "old job" in a new capacity.
"Hi, I'm Kate. I used to work here," McKinnon
quipped, emphasizing the novelty of performing a monologue as herself. She
humorously confessed, "I don't really like to talk in my own voice —
that’s kind of why I got into this racket in the first place."
Reflecting on her eventful year post-"SNL,"
McKinnon mentioned her notable role in the box office hit "Barbie."
The monologue took an unexpected turn when McKinnon serenaded "SNL"
executive producer Lorne Michaels with a customized rendition of "I'll Be
Home for Christmas," featuring whimsical lyrics like "feed me figs
and make me wigs/reactivate my ID." This heartwarming moment became even
more special with the surprise appearances of Rudolph and Wiig.
Closing the monologue with a festive touch, McKinnon, Wiig,
and Rudolph, in harmony, sang, "We came home for Christmas/It’s time to
start the show."
Billie Eilish, the musical guest making her third appearance
on "SNL" since 2019, added to the star-studded evening. Making her
debut during Season 45 and later hosting in Season 47, Eilish continued her
impressive streak. The chemistry between the hosts and the musical guest became
evident when, following Eilish's performance of the holiday classic "Have
Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," the show seamlessly transitioned into
a clever spoof of the 1890s-set Vincente Minnelli film "Meet Me in St.
Louis."
Wiig and Rudolph stayed on for a delightful sketch,
parodying TV pitches for Christmas albums. The trio, as the Swedish pop group
Abba, starred in a commercial for a holiday collection boasting "85
holiday remakes of their existing songs."
In a surprising and humorous twist, McKinnon took on the
role of a chainsaw-wielding character in the film spoof, adding an unexpected
touch to the night’s festivities.
With humor, heartwarming moments, and a touch of nostalgia,
this "Saturday Night Live" episode marked a memorable return for Kate
McKinnon, complemented by the comedic prowess of Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig,
and the musical talent of Billie Eilish. The trio's performance and chemistry
ensured the show's enduring appeal and left fans eagerly anticipating more
iconic moments in future episodes.
