Godzilla Minus One Roars to an $11 Million Opening Weekend in the U.S.
In a weekend spectacle that shook the U.S. box office,
Deadline's latest report unveils the triumphant entry of Takashi Yamazaki's
Godzilla Minus One into TOHO's iconic Godzilla franchise. The Numbers, with
precision, estimates the film's earnings at a formidable US$11,031,954 in its
first three days, securing a projected spot at #3 in the U.S. box office
rankings.
Should these estimations hold true, Godzilla Minus One is
poised to claim the title of the highest-grossing foreign film opening weekend
in the United States for the year, outshining the March debut of Demon Slayer:
Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc, which earned US$10.1 million.
Breaking down the numbers, Deadline reveals a powerful
Friday start for Godzilla Minus One, raking in US$4.7 million, followed by a
robust Saturday with earnings hitting US$3.7 million, and a steady Sunday with
US$2.58 million. This cinematic behemoth graced 2,308 theaters across the
nation during its opening weekend.
The thunderous success in the United States follows the
film's earlier release in Japan on November 3, 2023, celebrated as
"Godzilla Day" in honor of the first Godzilla film's release on
November 3, 1954. Prior to its U.S. debut, Godzilla Minus One made a
significant mark as the closing film at The Tokyo International Film Festival
(TIFF) on November 1.
The Japanese box office witnessed a formidable performance,
with Godzilla Minus One selling an impressive 648,600 tickets, amassing
1,041,193,460 yen (approximately US$6.93 million) within its initial three
days. This surpassed the achievements of its predecessor, Hideaki Anno and
Shinji Higuchi’s Shin Godzilla, by 14.7% in ticket sales and 22.8% in earnings
during their respective opening weekends in 2016.
Ryunosuke Kamiki, portraying the protagonist Kōichi
Shikishima, and Minami Hamabe, embodying the heroine Noriko Ōishi, lead a
stellar cast that includes Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka,
Sakura Andō, and Kuranosuke Sasaki. Notably, Kamiki and Hamabe also headline
NHK’s ongoing weekday morning series, Ranman.
As Godzilla Minus One continues to roar its way through
global cinemas, the film not only marks a significant milestone in the Godzilla
franchise but also stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of Kaiju
culture on the international stage.
