Cillian Murphy Highlights Emily Blunt's Humor: A Breath of Levity on the Oppenheimer Set
Cillian
Murphy embraced a profound role in Oppenheimer, yet found a source of humor in
his co-star, Emily Blunt.
Acknowledging
Blunt's comedic prowess, Murphy, 47, shared with The Los Angeles Times,
"She's also one of the funniest people, and I have a rule that I can't
work unless there's a lightness around the set." The duo's collaboration
in Christopher Nolan's J. Robert Oppenheimer biopic last summer resulted in
Murphy portraying the title character, while Blunt embodied his wife, Kitty
Oppenheimer, earning both Golden Globe Award nominations.
"I
need to feel at ease. I can't be in that dark place all the time," Murphy
emphasized, expressing his preference for a set with a touch of levity. Many of
his film projects delve into heavy and challenging themes, requiring a relaxed
atmosphere. He clarified, "A lot of the films I do are quite heavy and go
to some dark, challenging places, and you have to be relaxed to do that. So I
don't walk around in a state of f------ angst."
Blunt, as
Kitty Oppenheimer, and Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan's
OPPENHEIMER, showcased their compelling performances that have stirred
significant attention since the film's release.
Despite
being a leading contender for upcoming awards, Murphy humbly views his own
performance as "delicate and tiny, most of it." Recognizing the
grandeur of Oppenheimer's themes, he explained, "I knew it would have to
be a quiet, small performance because the themes are f------ huge." This
approach was crucial, especially considering the Imax camera capturing the
subtleties that would be magnified on an 80-foot screen.
Oppenheimer's
acclaim has continued to grow, securing eight nominations at the upcoming
Golden Globes and a remarkable 13 nominations, including acting nods for both
Murphy and Blunt, at the Critics Choice Awards. The film stands out as a
noteworthy contender in the midst of awards season buzz.
In a recent
interview, Murphy shed light on the sacrifices made for Oppenheimer, with Blunt
revealing his restricted diet. She noted that Murphy "could only eat,
like, an almond every day" to achieve the necessary weight loss for the
role. Robert Downey Jr., another co-star, emphasized Murphy's unparalleled
commitment, stating, "I never witnessed a greater sacrifice by a lead
actor in my career" during the filming of Oppenheimer.
As
Oppenheimer continues to captivate audiences, it's evident that Murphy and
Blunt's dynamic collaboration, infused with humor and commitment, has played a
pivotal role in the film's success on both artistic and awards-worthy fronts.
