Urgent Alert: Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Cantaloupe and Pre-cut Fruit Claims Two Lives and Hospitalizes 45
In a concerning development, the CDC has reported 45 hospitalizations and two fatalities due to a salmonella outbreak associated with cantaloupes and pre-cut fruit.
This week alone, 56 new cases have emerged, bringing the
total to 99 cases across 32 states. Both fatalities occurred within the same
timeframe, prompting heightened concern.
The CDC has issued a critical alert specifically targeting
whole cantaloupes with stickers bearing the names "Malichita" or
"Rudy." Look for the numbers "4050" and the label
"Product of Mexico/produit du Mexique" on these stickers.
Responding promptly, the Food and Drug Administration
initiated a recall on Wednesday. The recall pertains to Malachita and Rudy
brand cantaloupes sold from Oct. 10 to Nov. 3, and "Malachita / Z
Farms" labeled cantaloupes sold from Oct. 31 to Nov. 9.
Extending the recall to pre-cut fruit products, Freshness
Guaranteed and RaceTrac brands are also affected. These recalled items include
cantaloupe chunks, seasonal blend, melon mix, and fruit mix products
distributed in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, North
Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
ALDI and Vineyard brand products are also implicated in the
outbreak. On Nov. 14, recalls were issued for ALDI whole cantaloupes and
pre-cut fruit products, including cantaloupe chunks and pineapple spears sold
between Oct. 27 and Oct. 31 in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, and
Wisconsin.
Vineyard's recall encompasses its fruit medley cup,
cantaloupe cube, fruit mix kit, cantaloupe cubes, melon variety pack, and three
melon cups and medlies sold between Oct. 30 and Nov. 10.
In response to the outbreak, the CDC strongly advises
disposing of any recalled products or returning them to the point of purchase.
Additionally, thoroughly wash any surfaces that may have come into contact with
these products.
Recognizing the urgency, it's crucial for individuals to be
aware of salmonella symptoms, which include diarrhea, a fever exceeding 102
degrees Fahrenheit, bloody stool, vomiting, and dehydration. Onset can occur as
early as six hours post-ingestion or up to six days later.
Vulnerable populations, such as children, the elderly, and
those with compromised immune systems, are particularly susceptible to severe
illness and potential fatality from salmonella infection. Stay vigilant and
prioritize your health during this critical time.
