Green Day Alters Iconic Lyrics to Criticize Trump in New Year's Eve TV Performance
Green Day
made a bold statement during their New Year's Eve performance on ABC's
"Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" by modifying the lyrics of one
of their most recognized songs to take a swipe at former President Donald Trump
and his supporters.
In the
spotlight, lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong passionately declared, “I’m not a
part of the MAGA agenda,” a departure from the original line, “I’m not a part
of a redneck agenda,” to directly reference Trump’s “Make America Great Again”
slogan.
This isn't
the first time Green Day has made this lyrical adjustment. The band previously
employed the change at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas in 2019,
during Trump's presidency. In 2016, shortly after Trump's election victory,
they chanted, “No Trump, no KKK [Ku Klux Klan], no fascist USA,” while
performing "Bang Bang" at the American Music Awards.
Armstrong's
disdain for Trump has been evident in past statements, notably at a private
party in 2018 when he candidly expressed, “I f—ing hate Donald Trump so much,”
emphasizing the stark contrast he felt compared to his sentiments towards
George Bush. According to a Variety report, he likened Trump's impact to
"acid gone bad."
The Rock
& Roll Hall of Fame inductees, Green Day, are gearing up for the release of
their new album later this month, titled "Saviors." According to the
band's statement on YouTube, the album will touch on a wide array of topics
such as power pop, punk, rock, indie triumph, disease, war, inequality,
influencers, yoga retreats, alt right, dating apps, masks, mental health,
climate change, oligarchs, social media division, free weed, fentanyl, and
fragility. The first track, “The American Dream Is Killing Me,” was already
released in autumn.
With the
2024 presidential race gaining momentum, the band's politically charged
performance reflects the heightened stakes for democracy. At HuffPost, we
remain committed to providing free journalism, believing that an informed
