In the debut trailer for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, the latest chapter in Murphy's cherished action-comedy saga, the 62-year-old actor-comedian reprises his role as Detective Axel Foley, once again hitting the streets of Beverly Hills, as revealed in an official synopsis.

 

Facing a threat to his daughter's life, Foley (played by Taylour Paige) joins forces with a new partner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and reunites with old friends Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton) to unravel a conspiracy, amplifying the thrill factor.

 

In the original 1984 blockbuster, Murphy's character, a Detroit detective, ventures to southern California in pursuit of solving his childhood friend's murder (James Russo). Despite his unconventional methods, Foley's quick wit and charm eventually win over local lawmen Rosewood (Reinhold, 66) and Taggart (Ashton, 75), leading to a victorious takedown of the villains.

In Axel F, Murphy remains "the same Axel Foley," as highlighted by producer Jerry Bruckheimer in Netflix's Tudum event.

 

"He's still hitting the streets. He's still doing what he does," Bruckheimer, 80, emphasized. "With age, comes wisdom, but he hasn't lost that sparkle in his eye."

 

Molloy echoed this sentiment, revealing to Tudum, "Some of the most amusing moments in Axel F come from Eddie's improvisation."

 

"As a director, my primary task was to create the perfect environment and assemble the right cast around Eddie to let him shine," Molloy added.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Murphy disclosed that continuing Foley's story four decades after the character's cinematic debut was a challenging journey.

 

"It was a tough one," confessed the Saturday Night Live alum. "I portrayed Axel Foley when I was in my 20s. Those days are behind me."

 

Murphy continued, "Being an action movie, it was a demanding experience. But we powered through."

 

Axel F also features Paul Reiser as Jeffrey Friedman, Bronson Pinchot as Serge, and Kevin Bacon as Captain Cade Grant, according to Tudum.
