FKA twigs Challenges Calvin Klein Ad Ban, Citing 'Double Standards

FKA twigs has taken to Instagram to address the ban on a Calvin Klein advertisement, claiming it portrays her as a "stereotypical sexual object."

The Calvin Klein poster of singer FKA twigs received two complaints

According to a UK regulator, the poster, featuring the singer in a denim shirt, was deemed likely to cause serious offense by objectifying women. FKA twigs expressed her views on Instagram, suggesting that the ban revealed "double standards" in the industry.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) defended its ruling, asserting that the image, showcasing FKA in a denim shirt drawn halfway around her body, focused more on her physique than the advertised clothing. The text above her read, "Calvins or nothing."

In response, FKA twigs refuted the label of a "stereotypical sexual object," asserting that she sees herself as a "beautiful strong woman of color" whose body has overcome immense pain.

Referencing a recent Calvin Klein campaign featuring actor Jeremy Allen White, FKA twigs pointed out possible double standards in the industry. Jeremy Allen White's campaign gained attention, with questions posed to him at the Golden Globes.

Despite the ban, FKA twigs expressed pride in the photos and extended thanks to Calvin Klein and photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot.

The ASA disclosed receiving three complaints about Jeremy Allen White's ads – one related to a magazine and two to a TV version. While reviewing these complaints, the ASA has not initiated a full investigation into claims of the ads "sexually objectifying the model."

Calvin Klein defended its advert, stating it aligned with their past releases in the UK. Responding to FKA's post, an ASA spokesperson reiterated their ruling, highlighting the ad's irresponsibility in objectifying a woman and inappropriate targeting.

In conclusion, FKA twigs' response to the Calvin Klein ad ban underscores her rejection of being labeled a "stereotypical sexual object." The ongoing scrutiny of similar campaigns and the controversy surrounding Jeremy Allen White's ads point to a broader discussion on double standards within the advertising industry. Despite the ban, FKA twigs remains proud of the photos, emphasizing the strength and resilience of her identity as a woman of color. Calvin Klein, in defending its ad, faces the challenge of navigating evolving societal standards and the need for responsible advertising practices.
